LAHORE girl in Madhur’s DIL TOH BACHCHA HAI JI

Shot to fame with her critically acclaimed debut film LAHORE, Shraddha Das certainly has a reason to celebrate. Shraddha has outdone 100 girls to be casted in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Rom-Com- DIL TOH BACHCHA HAI JI as one of the leading ladies. The film stars big names like Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi and the Chatur of 3 IDIOTS, Omi Vaidya. Shraddha is paired opposite Omi in the film.
The actress went for the auditions of this movie and was one of the 100 young women who were auditioned for the role she bagged. “After my auditions I did not hear from anyone from the movie. I was heartbroken and just didn’t know what to do. But when I finally got a call and they said that out of the 100 women they auditioned I have been selected for the role, I couldn’t stop jumping with happiness,” she says.
Shraddha has done some movies in the south and made her Hindi film debut in LAHORE. But it has always been her dream to be a part of Madhur’s movie. “I haven’t stopped smiling since the day I was signed on for DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI. My dream has come true and this is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life. Now I would tell people to dream more because dreams do come true,” says a very excited Shraddha.
The actress has been a part of many blockbuster movies down south and is known as the sequel queen because she has been a part of sequels of many Telugu movies like ARYA 2, MANTRA 2 and CHANDRAMUKHI 2. She has also sung song called ‘Gajjala Gurram’ in a Telugu movie titled SYE AATA.
Shraddha has seen all the movies made by Madhur and is a big fan of him, as she calls him her dream director. “I love his cinematic sensibilities. I have seen CHANDNI BAR, PAGE 3, CORPORATE, TRAFFIC SIGNAL and FASHION. What I really like about his movies is that women in his movies are not just a pretty picture in the frame. He makes all the characters in his movie important. When I was given the offer to be a part of this movie, I just said ‘YES’ without bothering to know what my role is going to be. I know that whatever he makes me do in this movie, I will have an identity and the character will be worth working on,” she further shares.
Well dreams do come true, is what this instance sums up. So keep dreaming and chasing your dreams, like Shraddha, who is now shooting for Madhur’s film in Mumbai and is on cloud nine, with joy no bound.

Sonam Kapoor turns fashion designer

You are going to love actor Abhay Deol’s Arjun Barman look in his forthcoming film,AISHA produced by Anil Kapoor Films Company. What’s more, couturier fashion designer Kunal Rawal sought inputs for this exquisite look from not anybody else but the heroine of the film and his good friend, Sonam Kapoor. After all, the fairer sex has the best fashion sense.
The actress, who delivered the biggest hit of her career with I HATE LUV STORYS, sure seems to have some hidden talents as her friend, Kunal reveals. “Sonam is a multi-tasker and she has multiple talents. The fact that her father-sister duo is producing the film gave her a lot of creative freedom and the power to implement them. In fact, I was amazed by Sonam’s fashion sense and her understanding of the adorable characters in the film,” admits Kunal Rawal, who is an accomplished high-end designer.

Prachi Desai looking for long innings in Bollywood

ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI releases today and Prachi is going through some nervous times. The youngest member amongst the film’s cast and crew, Prachi is enjoying only third Hindi film release of her career after ROCK ON and LIFE PARTNER. How is her professional life going, considering the fact that she has now been in the industry for some time?
“It has been exactly two and a half years since I started and when I look back, I feel that in the earlier days I used to feel so much like a lost child. I used to have these dreamy eyes and debuting with ROCK ON was like a dream coming true. Doing movies was an ambitious thing to do and I started off without any planning”, says Prachi, “Now ever since I have worked on OUATIM, I feel much more comfortable than how it was a couple of years back.

Anderson's five put England on top

Pakistan 147 for 9 (Gul 30*, Asif 0*, Anderson 5-49) England 354 (Morgan 130, Collingwood 82, Asif 5-77, Aamer 3-41) trail by 207 runs

Mohammad Asif's five wickets made the morning session Pakistan's but on a day for the bowlers, James Anderson cut through Pakistan to leave them eight runs adrift of the follow-on target with a wicket in hand. With the ball swinging prodigiously under leaden grey skies in Nottingham, 15 wickets fell for 170 runs throughout the day, and Anderson marked the occasion of his 28th birthday with 5 for 49.
Anderson made the initial incision by removing both openers before Steven Finn took a wrecking ball to Pakistan's middle order. Finn snatched 3 for 12 in his first spell as Pakistan went into freefall at 47 for 6 before Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Aamer's stubborn 58-run rearguard.
Anderson returned to snap their resistance, having both batsmen caught in the slips in successive overs to pick up his ninth five-wicket haul in Test cricket before Umar Gul's adventurous 30 took Pakistan to within touching distance of the 155 needed to make England bat again. As the gloom set in, however, the umpires decided that play could not continue despite the use of the stadium floodlights and the players were hauled off.
After Asif had sparked an England collapse in which six wickets fell for just 23 runs in the course of the morning, Pakistan's batsmen would have been expecting a spirited riposte from England's bowlers. They appeared completely unprepared for the scale of the assault.
Salman Butt was softened up by a clanging blow to the side of the helmet before he feathered an edge through to Matt Prior, and Anderson then came round the wicket to Imran Farhat after lunch, bending the ball past the batsman's attempted nudge to leg to shatter the stumps. Finn, fresh from his strength and conditioning training, extracted bounce and movement to pick up Umar Amin with a thick edge to second slip, which left Pakistan in the perilous position of 35 for 3.
The collapse was soon in full flow, and Anderson snatched his third as Ali was turned inside out by a booming outswinger to prompt an appeal for the catch behind. Umpire Tony Hill raised the finger but despite having UDRS referrals in the bank, Ali trudged off without questioning the decision. It was a strange decision, as replays appeared to show that the ball had missed the edge and touched the batsman's trouser pocket on the way through.
Finn then bullied both Akmals out in identical fashion, shaping the ball away from the bat with a touch of extra bounce outside off stump to draw indecisive prods to second slip. Malik and Aamer survived to see out his spell and briefly protect Pakistan's dangerously long tail with a partnership that was the second-highest of the match for either team so far, and it put the game-shaping importance of Eoin Morgan and Paul Collingwood's 219-run stand into proper perspective.
Malik's vigil was ended courtesy of a juggled catch by Andrew Strauss at first slip to give Anderson his fourth wicket, and his fifth came soon after as Aamer drove at a wide one to send a thick edge to Graeme Swann.
With Pakistan floundering at 108 for 8, Umar Gul took it upon himself to chase down the 47 still needed to avoid the follow-on with an attacking cameo. In gloomy conditions that had the umpires fiddling with their light-meters, Gul's innings was equal parts skill and luck. Fortuitous boundaries were picked up from leading edges and squirts through the slips before he got going with a stylish cover drive off Anderson.
He followed that up with a pull into the stands at midwicket before Broad pitched one up to beat Danish Kaneria's aimless drive and disturb the bails. Asif safely negotiated the final ball of Broad's over, but with that the umpires finally decided that conditions had deteriorated enough to send the players off.
Anderson's efforts, and the extent of Pakistan's batting capitulation, put the other five-wicket haul of the day - Asif's 5 for 77 - firmly in the shade, but England's collapse was, if anything, even more dramatic than Pakistan's. The home side had resumed on 331 for 4 but once Collingwood was removed for 82 in the sixth over of the morning the rest of the line-up quickly followed.
Asif bowled an unbroken spell from the Radcliffe Road end, trapping Collingwood with an inswinger to create an opening and give Pakistan the lift they so dearly needed, before pinging Morgan's back pad in front of off stump to reduce England to 344 for 6.
After Graeme Swann sold Matt Prior a dummy to see him run out for 6, England's tail fell in a heap, and Asif found himself on a hat-trick after nailing both Swann and Anderson in front of the stumps with deliveries that swung in unexpected directions. He found the edge of Finn's bat with the hat-trick delivery, but the chance fell well short of the slips.
Gul made a mess of Broad's stumps to bring the innings to a close in the very next over and complete a stunning collapse, but in the context of the game, one that was overshadowed by the Pakistani surrender that followed. If the low clouds continue to hover over Trent Bridge - and they are forecast to do so - Morgan and Collingwood's innings may well prove to be the decisive difference between the teams in this match.

30th barsi of MUHAMMAD RAFI: A BIG STORY

THE GREAT SIINGER OF 1940'S TO 80'S

ON HIS 30TH BARSI WE WILL PUT A LONG SIGHT ON HIS AMAZING CARRIER

  • EARLY YEARS AND BACKGROUND
Mohammed Rafi was born the youngest of six sons of Hajji Ali Mohammad at Kotla Sultan Singh, a town near Amritsar in Punjab (British India). Rafi, whose nickname was Pheeko, started singing by imitating chants of a fakir in his village. In 1935-36, Rafi's father shifted toLahore, and the rest of the family followed later. Rafi's family owned a men's salon in Lahore's Noor Mohalla. It was his brother-in-lawMohammed Hameed who spotted the talent in Rafi and encouraged him. Rafi learnt classical music from Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan,Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, Pandit Jiwanlal Matto and Firoze Nizami.

Rafi's first public performance came at the age of 13, when he was allowed to sing at a concert featuring the legendary K. L. Saigal. In 1941, Rafi, under Shyam Sunder, made his debut as a playback singer in the duet "Soniye nee, Heeriye nee" with Zeenat Begum in thePunjabi film Gul Baloch (the film was released in 1944). In that same year, Rafi was invited by All India Radio Lahore station to sing for them. He made his professional debut in the Shyam Sunder-directed 1941 film Gul Baloch and the Bombay film, Gaon Ki Gauri, the following year.

  • INITIAL DAYS IN MUMBAI
In 1944, Rafi moved to Bombay (now Mumbai), where poet Tanvir Naqvi introduced him to some of film producers including Abdul Rashid Kardar, Mehboob Khan and actor-director Nazeer. Rafi's first song with Naushad was "Hindustan ke hum hain" with Shyam Kumar, Alauddin and others, from A. R. Kardar's Pehle Aap (1944). Around the same time, Rafi recorded another song for the 1945 film Gaon ki Gori, "Aji dil ho kaaboo mein". He considered this song his first Hindi language song. In 1945, Rafi married his cousin Bashira, nicknamed "Majhi", in his village.

In 1945, Rafi appeared on the screen for the song "Tera Jalwa Jis Ne Dekha" in the film Laila Majnu. He sang a number of songs for Naushad as part of the chorus, including "Mere sapnon ki rani, Roohi Roohi" with K. L. Saigal from the film Shahjahan (1946). Rafi sand "Tera Khilona Toota Balak" from Mehboob Khan's Anmol Ghadi (1946) and a duet with Noor Jehan in the 1947 film Jugnu, "Yahan Badla Wafa Ka". Following the Partition of India, Rafi decided to stay in India and had his family flown to Bombay.

In 1948, Rafi sang "Suno Suno Aye Duniya Walon Bapu Ki Ye Amar Kahani", written by Rajendra Krishan. He was invited by the Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, to sing at the latter's house. In 1948, Rafi received a silver medal from Nehru on the Indian Independence Day. In 1949, Rafi was given solo songs by music directors such as Naushad, (Chandni Raat, Dillagi and Dulari) Shyam Sunder (Bazaar) and Husnalal Bhagatram (Meena Bazaar).

  • RISE TO FAME
Rafi's association with Naushad helped the former establish himself as one of the most prominent playback singers in Bollywood. Songs from Baiju Bawra (1952) like "O duniya ke rakhwale" and "Man tarpat Hari darshan ko aaj" furthered Rafi's credentials. Naushad, who heretofore had been using Talat Mahmood for his songs, began favoring Rafi as the male voice in almost every song he composed. Rafi would sing a total of 149 songs (81 of them solo) for Naushad.

In the late 1950s and 1960s, Rafi found favor with other notable composers of the era such as O. P. Nayyar, Shankar Jaikishan and S.D. Burman. Burman patronized Rafi as the singing voice of Dev Anand. Rafi worked with Burman in movies like Pyaasa (1957), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Tere Ghar ke Saamne (1962), Guide (1965), Aradhana (1969), and Abhimaan (1973). O. P. Nayyar was so impressed with Rafi that he got Rafi to sing a song Man mora baawara for singer-actor Kishore Kumar, in the movie Raagini. Later, Rafi would sing for Kishore Kumar in movies such as Baaghi, Shehzaada and Shararat Nayyar employed Rafi and Asha Bhosle for most of his songs. The team created many hit songs in early 1950s and 1960s for movies such as Naya Daur (1957), Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), and Kashmir Ki Kali (1964). Rafi sang a total of 197 numbers (56 solo) for Nayyar.

Rafi and Shankar Jaikishan were one of the most successful singer-music director pairs in the Hindi film industry. Under the baton of Shankar Jaikishan, Rafi produced his best numbers for heroes like Shammi Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar. Out of six Filmfare awards, Rafi won three for S-J songs, viz., Teri pyari pyari soorat ko, Baharon phool barsao, and Dil ke jharokhe mein. The iconic song Yahoo! Chahe koi mujhe junglee kahe was sung with aplomb by Rafi, only to be matched a furiously-paced orchestra and a superb composition by Shankar Jaikishan. S-J made Rafi give playback for Kishore Kumar in the film Sharart (Ajab hai daastan teri yeh zindagi). Rafi sang a total of 341 numbers (216 solo) for Shankar-Jaikishan. The hit films of this combination, to name only a few, are Basant Bahar, Professor, Junglee, Suraj, Brahmachari, An Evening in Paris, Dil Tera Deewana, Yakeen, Prince, Love in Tokyo, Beti Bete, Dil Ek Mandir, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, Gaban, Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai,and many-many more.

Rafi got his first Filmfare Award for the title song of Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), composed by Ravi. He got National Award for the songBabul Ki Duaen Leti Ja from the film Neel Kamal (1968), also composed by Ravi. Ravi and Rafi produced several other hit songs, in the filmsChina Town (1962), Kaajal (1965), and Do Badan (1966). Madan Mohan was another composer whose favorite singer was Rafi. Rafi's first solo with Madan Mohan in Ankhen (1950), "Hum ishq mein barbad hain barbad rahenge", was a great hit. They teamed up to produce many songs including "Teri Aankhon ke Siva", "Rang aur noor ki baraat", "Yeh Duniya Yeh Mehfil" and "Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho". The composer duoLaxmikant-Pyarelal ("L-P") also patronized Rafi as one of their leading singers, right from their very first film, Parasmani (1963). Both Rafi and L-P won the Filmfare Awards for the song "Chahoonga main tujhe saanjh savere" from Dosti (1964). Rafi sang a total of 369 numbers (186 solo) for L-P. Once, when famous composer Nisar Bazmi did not have enough money to pay him, Rafi charged a fee of one rupee and sang for him.

The 1960s witnessed the straining of relations between Rafi and the leading female playback singer in Hindi films, Lata Mangeshkar. Lata had wanted Rafi to back her in demanding a half-share from the five percent song royalty that the film's producer conceded to select composers. But Rafi took a diametrically opposite view, and believed that a playback singer's claim on the filmmaker ended with the payment of the agreed fee for the song. During the recording of "Tasveer Teri Dil Mein" (Maya, 1961), Lata argued with Rafi over a certain passage of the song. Rafi felt belittled, as music director Salil Chowdhury sided with Lata. The situation worsened when Lata Mangeshkar declared that she would no longer sing with Rafi. Rafi stated that he was only so keen to sing with Lata as she was with him. Later, at the insistence of S. D. Burman the two decided to reconcile and sing duets; on a personal level, there was still tension. During his last years, Rafi was involved in a controversy over Lata Mangeshkar's introduction in to the Guinness Book of World Records. In a letter dated June 11, 1977 to the Guinness Book of World Records, Rafi had challenged the claim that Lata Mangeshkar has recorded the maximum number of songs ("not less than 25,000" according to Guinness). After receiving a rather evasive reply from Guinness, in a letter dated November 20, 1979, he wrote: "I am disappointed that my request for a reassessment vis-a-vis Ms Mangeshkar's reported world record has gone unheeded.". After Rafi's death, in its 1984 edition, the Guinness Book of Word Records stated Lata Mangeshkar's name for the "Most Recordings" but also stated: "Mohammad Rafi (d 1 Aug 1980)  claimed to have recorded 28,000 songs in 11 Indian languages between 1944 and April 1980.".Many fans of Rafi state that he has sung over 28,000 songs. However, according to the available figures, Rafi has sung 4,516 Hindi film songs, 112 non-Hindi film songs, and 328 private (non-film) songs from 1945 to 1980. The Guinness Book entries for both Rafi and Lata were later removed in 1991.

Between 1950 and 1970, Rafi was the most sought after singers in Bollywood. He sang for all the major male stars in Hindi films. In 1965, he was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Sri award. Rafi recorded two Hindi songs in English on 7" release in 1968. He also sang a song in Creole while on his visit to Mauritius in the late 1960s. Rafi recorded two English albums as well. One of them isPop Hits. In Bollywood, yodeling is generally associated with Kishore Kumar but Rafi introduced yodeling in Indian film as playback singing. Rafi yodeled in some of his old songs, such as "Hello sweety seventeen" (duet with Asha Bhosle), "O Chale ho kaha", "Dilke Aine main", and "Unse Rippy Tippy Ho gayee" (duet with Geeta Dutt).
  • DEATH

On Thursday, July 31, 1980, Rafi died at 10:50 p.m., following a massive heart attack. His last song was "Shaam phir kyun udaas hai dost" (Aas Paas), which he had recorded with Laxmikant-Pyarelal few hours earlier to his death. He was survived by four sons (Saeed Rafi, Khalid Rafi, Hamid Rafi, Shahid Rafi), three daughters (Parveen, Nasreen, Yasmin) and 18 grandchildren.

Rafi was buried at the Juhu Muslim cemetery. In 2010, his tomb was demolished to make space for new bodies. Fans of Mohammed Rafi who arrive twice a year at his tomb, on December 24 and July 31, to mark his birth and death anniversary, use the coconut tree nearest to his grave as a marker.

When Sonam Kapoor’s pant slip off

Wardrobe Malfunction has been experienced by many Bollywood beauties like Lara Dutta, Bipasha Basu, Kangana Ranaut, Sherlyn Chopra and several others. Adding another name to the list is the Kapoor scion Sonam Kapoor. Sonam nearly escaped wardrobe malfunction. Her pants was about to slip off completely.
It all happened at the promotional event of ‘Aisha’ at a radio station recently. Sonam in full upbeat mood was interacting and dancing with her fans. Slowly, her pants started to slip. Conscious Sonam quickly managed the situation and lifted her pant. Two things are assumed, her pant might have loosen or the pins might have broken down.
Whatever, she acted smartly and managed the situation. Her assistant quickly stepped in and fastened the trousers again with a safety pin.
Produced by Rhea Kapoor and directed by Rajshree Ojha, ‘Aisha’ featured Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol in the lead.

“When we were in Naples, we started shooting at 8 in the morning, and I think by 8:45 I’d eaten eight or 10 pieces of pizza,” Julia told Entertainment Weekly Senior Writer Dave Karger. “Pizza was what I ate all day.”
The actress confessed that eating the carb-heavy food did take its toll.
“By the time we left Rome, I was seven to 10 pounds heavier,” Julia told the mag, which features the beauty on its cover this week. “I could’ve used a bigger pair of jeans when I went off to India!”
At a stunning 42-years-young, Julia said she is comfortable at her age, but does obsess over her looks now and again.
“I’m human. Sometimes I, like anybody, wake up in the morning and go, ‘F—. Really? This is the starting point?’” she said.

State Investigators Won’t File Charges Against 7 Doctors Who Treated Michael Jackson

State investigators probing the death of Michael Jackson have decided not to file charges against seven doctors who treated him, authorities said Wednesday.
The doctors were part of an investigation by state Attorney General Jerry Brown’s Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, spokeswoman Christine Gasparac said.
One doctor whose name was not released has been referred to the California Medical Board for prescribing drugs to a Jackson alias, she said.
Candis Cohen, a board spokeswoman, declined to confirm the action, saying complaints and investigations were not public record.
Jackson’s personal doctor, Conrad Murray, has pleaded not guilty to felony involuntary manslaughter in the singer’s death. Authorities say Murray provided Jackson with a mix of sedatives, including a powerful anesthetic that killed him.
Los Angeles police who investigated the death had asked state and federal investigators to look into the prescribing practices of doctors who previously treated the 50-year-old pop star.
The federal Drug Enforcement Agency has also stopped investigating the actions of any other Jackson doctors, agency spokeswoman Sarah Pullen said.
The state investigation included the search of a prescription drug database that tracks doctors who prescribe controlled substances. The database also monitors the quantity and recipients of those drugs.

PAA director Balki wants Big B as cricket commentator!

balki.jpg (305×182)
After successfully directing two films, CHEENI KUM and PAA, both starring Amitabh Bachchan, Balki now wants the megastar to try something very different and diverse, though not exactly unique. The director was addressing the media at IIM Lucknow and talking about the effects of advisements and ad films in general.
The man behind super successful ads like Surf Excel ‘Daag Achche Hain’, Tata Tea ‘Jaago Re’ and Idea’s ‘Walk And Talk’, not only spoke about advertisements but also his second passion, films, and his favourite star Amitabh Bachchan. When we asked him about one role in which he would like to see Amitabh, Balki was quick to reply, “It is my wish to see Amitabh Bachchan essaying the role of a cricket commentator in one of my films. I want to see and hear him doing commentary because in my opinion, coming from Amitabh it is something that he would excel at.”
Well, definitely this is one role that not only Balki but also the audience, especially Amitabh’s fans would want to materialize in a film as no one can forget his excellent rendition of the hilarious cricket commentary scene in NAMAK HALAL, which had the public laughing their heads off.

Akshay: I won’t pretend living in a world of rainbows

In his two decade career so far, Akshay Kumar has done close to 100 films so far. However, in majority of films that he has done, he has played a cool urban guy. Also, even in those films where he may not be cool after all and would be closer to the real world (read HERA PHERI, HOUSEFULL, DE DANA DAN, 8X10 TASVEER), the background has always been urban. No wonder, when he got into a small town setting for KHATTA MEETHA, eyebrows were raised. Doesn’t Akshay feel that a small town setting is a little risky because could have alienated a larger segment of urban audience?
“If people refuse to see a film because of its poorer settings then all I can say is that you obviously don’t live in the real world”, says Akshay, “I mean no harm but it is our villages that supply urban cities with milk and food and other basic things. You cannot pretend to refuse to acknowledge them.”

Emraan Hashmi breaks his rule with ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI

For Emraan, it was fascinating to work in a film like ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI since it enabled him to relive the era gone’ something about which he had only heard from his parents.
“My dad has been through the times in the 70s and the 80s when underworld stories had first started making headlines. As a kid, I used to chance upon hearing such stories”, recollects Emraan, “Now that Milan was narrating the script to me, I found myself exploring the roots of where it all began. Underworld figures have always been larger than life and what we get to see in the film is some really fascinating stuff. I am sure we have a winner in hands.”

Ajay Devgn: I can’t watch my films after a few years

Ajay Devgn is perhaps one of the most underrated actors. Not many must be aware that he has already completed 20 long years in the industry.
So in is two-decade-old career, what according to Ajay has been his biggest learning curve? “I don’t have any particular learning curve. You learn little things everyday. You learn with your own good work and mistakes. You also learn from mistakes of others. You keep on grasping things and don’t even realise when you are utilising them,” he states.

Pakistan, England 1st Test today at Trent Bridge

Pakistan play England for the first time in a Test match since the when they meet on Thursday at Trent Bridge.
For the tourists, the four-Test series represents the opportunity to establish a new era under the guidance of Salman Butt and conclude a debilitating period of internal turmoil blighted by extraordinary politicking.
Butt is the fifth captain in 18 turbulent months which have left Pakistan homeless and without their two most experienced players, currently serving indefinite bans.
But as ever with Pakistan, the nadirs are interspersed with astonishing peaks - their World Twenty20 victory on English soil in 2009 coincided with the emergence of arguably the most talented teenager in cricket, Mohammad Aamer, as well as their first Test win against Australia in 15 years last week.
It’s almost impossible to predict how Pakistan will perform this summer but for England, this Test series is their last chance to assess their prospects ahead of the Ashes this winter.
If the off-field chronicles of Pakistani cricket were ever turned into a stage play, it would make Macbeth look like an episode of the Teletubbies.
Betrayal, deceit, treachery and conceit were just some of the words used to describe the most turbulent of 12 months for a country already on its knees suffering the effects of its extremely unstable security situation.
Pakistan have been forced to use England as their foster home because no international team will tour the country following the attack at Lahore.
But as if the crippling effects of a cricket embargo were not debilitating enough, the lowest nadir in the country’s 58-year Test history was brewing during a disastrous tour to Australia at the end of 2009.
After losing all three Test matches, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 match, the Pakistan Cricket Board concluded former captains Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan were responsible for “in-fighting which…brought down the whole team”,
As if that wasn’t enough, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Shoaib Malik were each given one-year bans while Shahid Afridi, Kamran and Umar Akmal were fined and placed on six-month probations following an inquiry to determine the extent of the mutiny to undermine Yousuf’s captaincy.
Yet bizarrely, and despite the heavy fine and probation, Twenty20 captain Afridi was then appointed to take over the Test duties. But more poignantly, Pakistan lost four of their most experienced players - Younus and Yousuf have over 13,000 Test runs between them, with the latter announcing his retirement from cricket shortly after the ban.
And with a ‘home’ two-Test series against Australia, a team who had beaten Pakistan in 12 successive five-day matches, to contest on neutral soil, their prospects looked bleak.
Through the constant back-stabbing and politicking, new coach Waqar Younis, Pakistan’s 14th in 15 years following the sacking of Intikhab Alam in March, promised to unite a deeply divided team by playing aggressive cricket.
That’s not the easiest pledge to execute in the absence of your most experienced players, but Pakistan have a long history of throwing in raw talent not long out of short trousers.
And every so often they unearth a priceless gem such as Mohammad Aamer.
It’s practically impossible not to admire the fleet-footed run-up, whip-like left-arm and discernable movement on and off the pitch and not scream “Wasim Akram”.
The 18-year-old has 32 Test wickets in 10 Tests, including the scalp of Australia captain Ricky Ponting on five occasions.
But according to Wasim, Pakistan’s record wicket-taker with 414 wickets, Aamer “is definitely a much cleverer bowler at his age than I was”, which should send shivers down the spines of England’s top order.
Aamer is integral to Pakistan’s future aspirations, along with Salman Butt, appointed captain less than 24 hours after Afridi announced his retirement from Test cricket following Pakistan’s 150-run defeat by Australia at Lord’s earlier this month.
The elegant but frustratingly inconsistent opening batsman became the country’s sixth captain in 18 months but instantly became a hero when he broke Pakistan’s 15-year winless run against Australia in the second Test at Headingley last week.
A 100% record is unlikely to last - but if overhead conditions are anything like they were on the then England’s batsmen are in serious danger.
Trent Bridge is the type of ground swing bowlers dream about - and Pakistan are blessed with three of the most gifted exponents in world cricket.
Aamer and Mohammad Asif, the closest bowler to Glenn McGrath around, tore through Australia’s first-innings top order at Headingley with an exhibition of movement in the air and off the pitch, while Umar Gul can cause havoc reverse swinging the older ball.
The triumvirate are brilliantly supported by the guile of leg-spinner Danish Kaneria, the most experienced of the bowling quartet with 260 Test wickets in 60 matches.
Each bowler offers a different examination - Aamer’s pace, angle and late inswing to the right-handers, Asif’s leg-cutters, Gul’s late movement and Kaneria’s deceptive variety. And if conditions are in their favour, England’s top order will struggle to contain the best bowling unit in world cricket.
Unfortunately for Pakistan fans, the batting department remains frustratingly inconsistent. Flashes of brilliance are too often interspersed by poor shot selection or indiscipline when running between the wickets.
The absence of Yousuf and Younus has left a chasm in the middle order, with little option but to give untested Azhar Ali and Umar Amin their Test debuts against Australia at Lord’s.
Neither looked out of place at the highest level, but when you consider openers Butt and Farhat have Test averages of 32.61 and 33.98 respectively, Pakistan’s top four is as vulnerable as it is talented.
However, the dashing Umar Akmal, younger brother of wicketkeeper Kamran, has the ability to win matches single-handedly with his brash and often barbaric batting, although his reluctance to play the match situation will inevitably frustrate and enthral in equal measure.
Pakistan’s fielding has the tendency to look distinctly village at times, while Akmal’s wicketkeeping is either flawless or useless.
Standards markedly improved during the Australia series in England, with most slip catches sticking, but the outfielding remains inconsistent and behind the likes of Australia, South Africa and England.

Diaz, a commitment phobic?

She has starred in numerous romantic comedies but superstar Cameron Diaz doesn't find the idea of spending her entire life with one person an interesting deal.

The 37-year-old beauty, who has dated a number of Hollywood hunks including Justin Timberlake, Jared Leto and Matt Dillon, says she doesn't want to stay with the same man for her entire life. The 'Knight And Day' star, who is rumoured to be dating baseball star Alex Rodriguez, gets "freaked out" by the thought of commitment, Contactmusic reported.

"I think the big misconception in our society is that we're supposed to meet the one when we're 18 and we're supposed to get married to them and love them for the rest of our lives," Diaz said. Diaz admitted that she would preferably date different people than be with someone for 80 years, Stylist magazine reported.

"Who would want to be with the same person for 80 years? Why not break it up a little bit? I think people get freaked out about getting married and spending 20 or 30 years sleeping with the same person but if that's the case, don't do it.

Natalie Portman On Chris Hemsworth’s Rise To Fame: ‘He’s Going To Be Able To Handle All Of That’

Following his appearnace at Comic-Con, Chris Hemsworth left fanboys — and girls — in awe of his muscular “Thor” physique.
As it turns out, the fans aren’t the only ones who have taken a liking to this rising star — his co-star Natalie Portman is a big fan, too.
While promoting the film, Natalie, who plays Jane Foster, a nurse and the first love of Chris’ title character, spoke with AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman about the Aussie actor and the upcoming fame he is sure to gain from this landing this action-packed role.
“He’s so grounded, kind and just a nice, normal person,” she said. “I know he’s going to be able to handle all of that with incredible grace. He already has.”
Chris’ star status will change dramatically as he stars as “Thor,” the hammer-wielding superhero fans have come to love from the Marvel comic book. For the role, he bulked up in muscle mass to fill out his character’s nice, big red cape. He even shows off a long blonde wig.
However, it’s not just his strapping good looks that had his co-star in awe — Natalie also beamed over Chris’ demeanor, calling him a “decent” and “deeply good” guy.
“I know that everything will change for him in terms of career and notoriety,” she added.
Chris is best known from his most prominent (although brief) role as Kirk’s dad in 2009’s reboot of “Star Trek.” “Thor” marks his first starring role.
“Thor,” which centers around the Norse warrior cast down to Earth to live among humans, hits theatres on May 6, 2011.

Kangna Ranaut reveals the BIG secret

The cat is out of the bag. Kangna has admitted that the character of Rehana which she plays in ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI is indeed based on a real actress who existed in the 70s. Her name was Sona and though no one knows where she is today, she was the love interest of Haji Mastan (a Mumbai based don on whom Ajay Devgn’s character is based).
“Well, I have been told that Haji Mastan was in love with this girl called Sona”, Kangna says in a hush-hush tone, “She was a Madhubala look-alike and a struggler during the 70s. She had worked in this film called KACHCHE DHAAGE that starred Vinod Khanna and Moushumi Chatterjee. When Haji Mastan and Sona met, they became romantically involved. Mugdha and Bobby lock lips in HELP?

Being looked upon as this year’s one of most unconventional on screen pairs, Bobby Deol and Mugdha Godse will be seen in some very cosy scenes in their upcoming horror film HELP, when it hits the theatres on Friday the 13th in August 2010.
With changing times in Bollywood, nowadays movie promotion has become one of the most important factors contributing to a film’s success and production houses use aggressive marketing strategies and some out of the box ideas for the same. In symmetry to this, HELP has already managed to set ablaze the markets with the bikini photos of Mugdha which have been doing the media rounds lately. Now we see some ecstatic intimate pictures of Bobby and Mugdha from HELP and from one of the pictures one can easily guess a near lip-lock between the two, which has come out as a latest tool of promotion for the film. But have Mugdha and Bobby really locked the lips in the film or not, well this still remains a mystery, which the makers of the film might reveal at later stages of promotion.

NAUGHTY @FORTY Govinda and youthful Yuvika in Manali!

Bollywood’s favourite destination in India, Manali, which has been deprived of shooting and film stars for a while has seen quite an influx of people from the tinsel town ever since the Deepa Mehta directed TERE MERE PHERE and Vipul Shah’s Akki-Ash starrer ACTION REPLAYY knocked on it’s doors.
The latest to arrive in Manali is comedy king Govinda aka Chi Chi.
The crew of the Jagmohan Mundhra directed NAUGHTY @ FORTY reached Manali on Sunday itself, followed by the OSO girl, Yuvika Chaudhari.
The local coordinator, Rajkumar Dogra, has revealed that the famous scenic spots of Manali and it’s surroundings, like Solang Valley, snow laden Marhi, the dangerous Rohtang Pass, the incredible Rahla fall, heritage village Nagger along with the extremely picturesque Kothi and Gulaba valley have already been earmarked for shooting .
The unit is expected to complete the shooting in around twenty days.
The local people as well as the tourists are hoping to meet the artists and especially the fans of Govinda (last here for RADHA KA SANGAM in the early 90s) are pretty excited at the prospect of meeting him.
