pakistani team is under investigation

Bookie Mazhar Majeed, who is now reportedly under arrest, said Pakistan captain Salman Butt was involved in the match-fixing and was the ringleader of the scandal in the ongoing fourth Test against England at Lord's.

In a dramatic development the Scotland Yard detectives visited the Pakistan dressing room immediately after the third day's play to question the players after a British tabloid's sting operation exposed the alleged nexus between players and the bookies.

"Scotland Yard detectives had visited the team hotel where they had taken statements of captain Salman Butt, fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal," Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed said.

The 'News of the World' tabloid alleged that a Pakistani man Mazhar Majeed, who is now under arrest, had paid bribes to the players to bowl no-balls and wides in the series and the Lord's Test.

The tabloid claims it has video evidence confirming involvement of seven players which it had shared with Scotland Yard triggering off the investigation into the spot-fixing racket.

The International Cricket Council said it was aware of all the developments and made it clear that the fourth day's play of the ongoing Test will continue as scheduled.

"No players nor team officials have been arrested in relation to this incident and the fourth Test match will continue as scheduled on Sunday.

"As this is now subject to a police investigation neither ICC, ECB, PCB nor the ground authority, the MCC, will make any further comment," an ICC statement said.

Yawar said that the investigators also talked to him but denied that they raided the rooms of the players and recovered money and seized their laptops and phones.

"The police have also spoken to me and we are trying to cooperate with them in every way possible and we are giving them what information they want," Yawar said.

But sources said the Scotland Yard detectives gathered some evidence from the hotel after raiding the player's room.

Geo Television has also reported that Scotland Yard have visited the Pakistan team hotel and inspected players rooms and the police is said to have recovered large amounts of money from rooms of some players and also seized their mobile phones.

Confirming that he had contacted the Pakistan High Commission in London for assistance, Yawar said, "the High Commissioner is also in touch with the Scotland Yard in this issue. We are cooperating with them."

Police in London have picked up Majeed and his accomplice in connection with the scandal. Majeed, 35, was arrested late on Saturday night after the tabloid handed over details of its sting operation to the Scotland Yard.

Sources close to the Pakistan team also have confirmed that the police went into Pakistan dressing room in connection with the arrests as Majeed claims to have paid off some players in excess of 150,000 pounds to fix the Test match.

"The police have carried out preliminary questioning of some players. Majeed is an old associate and friend of many Pakistani players and is settled in London. He has been seen regularly with the players on the tour," one source said.

"The sad part for the Pakistan cricket is that several leading players are said to be involved in this new scandal which could cause untold damage to Pakistan cricket," he said.

Pakistani TV channels reported that the players had been sounded off about the inquiry when the third day's play ended.

"That is why the players left early for the hotel without anyone attending the mandatory day's post-play press conference," a source said.

Pakistan had reduced England to 47 for five and then 102 for seven on second day at Lord's but then allowed Jonathan Trott and Stuart Broad to score centuries and share a new record eighth-wicket partnership of 332 runs.

The two Pakistanis who allegedly bowled no-balls under directions from Majeed were Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif. Both bowlers delivered three no-balls on Thursday and Friday.

The two bowlers delivered the no-balls "at precisely the moments promised to our reporter," the tabloid said.

"Our undercover team was posing as front men for a Far East gambling cartel. In return for their suitcase of money Majeed then calmly detailed what would happen - and when - on the field of play next day, as a taster of all the lucrative information he could supply in future," it reported.

Pakistan was bowled out for 74 on Saturday and made to follow-on where they reduced to 41 for four at stumps facing certain defeat and a big series loss.

While match-fixing is fixing the result of the whole match, the spot-fixing is fixing events within a match, may be on ball-by-ball basis.

This is not the first time that Akmal's name has come up in a match fixing allegation.

After Australian tour earlier this year, former Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam and assistant coach Aaqib Javed (who is still with the team) had expressed suspicions about Kamran's involvement with bookies after assessing his performance in the Sydney Test.

Meanwhile, Iqbal Mohammad Ali who heads National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports blamed the PCB and its Chairman Ijaz Butt for the humiliation Pakistan cricket was facing.

"We and the Senate sports committee had warned that if some players were suspected of having ties with bookies they should be dropped from the team and disciplined.

"But no one paid heed. If these players are now guilty we want to see them behind the bars because this conduct is unacceptable," Ali said.

Swann's wickets keep game in the balance

Pakistan 111 for 4 (Yousuf 16*, Azhar 0*) trail England 233 by 122 runs

England made three important blows on the second morning at The Oval, but it took them until shortly before lunch to remove nightwatchman Wahab Riaz as Pakistan reached the interval on 111 for 4. Graeme Swann twice struck in the first over of a spell after Steven Finn made a breakthrough with the second ball of the day, although Mohammad Yousuf was settling ominously after a careful start.
Matt Prior juggled an edge off Salman Butt but eventually held on, England v Pakistan, 3rd Test, The Oval, August 19, 2010
Yousuf understandably took time to play himself in and was beaten by good deliveries from Finn and James Anderson, but slowly began to find his feet with a neat clip through backward square and a straight drive off Finn. England had made the perfect beginning when Finn found Yasir Hameed's outside edge with the second ball of the day. Hameed had been refreshingly positive on the first evening, but edged the first delivery in front of third slip before offering Matt Prior a regulation catch.

Salman Butt, demoted down the order after Hameed's inclusion, was given an early life. Eoin Morgan spilled a catch at backward from a fiercely hit square cut although it didn't prove too costly for England as Swann, who was added to the ICC Cricketer of the Year list after controversially being omitted yesterday, once again struck as soon as he came into the attack.
Butt, after driving a pleasant boundary, top edged a cut and Prior juggled the ball before finally holding onto the chance which left Pakistan wobbling on 76 for 3. However, Riaz was proving much harder to shift despite a first-class average of 15.22. He was resolute against England's quicks and picked up most of his runs down to third man, but when Swann was introduced was confident enough to sweep him strongly through square leg.
As with his bowling yesterday, Riaz grinned his way through most of the innings and it looked as though he would see out the session until he missed a sweep at the first ball of Swann's second spell. The request for a review was a waste and would have been better served being saved for a frontline batsman.

Salman Has Started His Twitter Campaign For ‘Dabangg’

Will Salman Khan’s tweet magic work for ‘Dabangg’?
Ever since Salman joined Twitter, he has been regularly recommending one film or another. And the ones that he has so far recommended have all been successes. It started first with ‘Raajneeti’. One of Salman’s first tweets was in favour of the film, although he had not seen it. Prakash Jha’s political thriller clicked at the box office.
Then came Salman’s tweets on debutant Punit Malhotra’s ‘I Hate Luv Storys’. That too jelled with the audience. Lately, Salman has been gung-ho about another debutant Abhishek Sharma’s ‘Tere Bin Laden’ because its producer Pooja Shetty is a pal.
That too has been very well-received.
Brother Arbaaz is now sure the tweet-magic would work for their home production ‘Dabangg’. Without informing Arbaaz, Salman has already started posting images and comments on ‘Dabangg’ on the social networking site.
‘If Salman’s recommendations worked for three films so far, why not for us? We seem to have a resident soothsayer. And I plan to make maximum use of him,’ said Arbaaz.
He admits Salman has started his Twitter campaign for ‘Dabangg’ a little prematurely.
‘He has been going around taking pictures on the sets and putting them on Twitter. It shows his enthusiasm for the film. I am happy to have Salman on my side. ‘Dabangg’ is a very important release for Salman. He has no other release this year. We hope to use his time for him to visit non-metropolitan cities for promotion, since ‘Dabangg’ is set in a small north Indian town,’ he said.
As for his uninterrupted luck on Twitter Arbaaz laughs: ‘I think more producers need to have Salman on their side, if the industry is to have more hits.’

Gates plans to slash 'top-heavy' Pentagon hierarchy

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates moved to slash a "top-heavy" military hierarchy, announcing plans to eliminate at least 50 posts for generals and admirals, close a major command and cut back on the use of contractors.

Mounting the most ambitious Pentagon reform in a decade, Gates said harsh fiscal and economic realities require that it "make every dollar count" as it fights two wars and equips itself to confront potential adversaries elsewhere.

President Barack Obama applauded the effort, acknowledging that "change is never easy."

"These reforms will ensure that our nation is safer, stronger, and more fiscally responsible," he said in a statement.

US defense budgets have doubled to some 700 billion dollars a year since 2001, but Gates warned that the Pentagon now needs to tighten its belt to sustain and modernize the US force.

At a press conference, he unveiled a series of measures targeting the proliferation of personnel in his own office, in military headquarters, defense agencies and intelligence-related units.

"The culture of endless money that has taken hold must be replaced by a culture of restraint," he said.

Netanyahu testifies at flotilla inquiry

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu testified in Jerusalem Monday before an inquiry into a deadly raid on a flotilla of aid ships headed to Gaza earlier this year.
Netanyahu was the first witness in the government-appointed commission, which is investigating the events of May 31, when Israeli soldiers boarded one of several vessels carrying aid to the Palestinian territory in international waters and killed nine Turkish activists.
The ships were trying to break through an Israeli naval blockade that has been in place since 2007 when Hamas assumed control of the territory. Israel maintains the raid was provoked and that its soldiers acted in self-defence. The incident sparked a diplomatic crisis between Israel and Turkey as well as widespread protests around the world.

Haider gives Pakistan hope as Swann takes six

Zulqarnain Haider drives down the ground, England v Pakistan, 2nd Test, Edgbaston, August 8, 2010
Against all expectation Pakistan carried the second Test into the fourth day against an increasingly agitated England
team as Zulqarnain Haider played the innings of his life to defy the hosts with 88 off 200 balls. When Graeme Swann bagged his fourth wicket - on the way to a career-best 6 for 60 - the visitors were 101 for 6, but Zulqarnain found outstanding support in the contrasting styles of Mohammad Amir and Saeed Ajmal to build a lead of 112 and finally make the series a contest.
Zulqarnain added 115 with Ajmal, who played his part with a gusty maiden Test fifty from 77 balls despite taking a peppering from England's quick bowlers, after initially stemming Pakistan's latest collapse as he and Amir blocked their way through 36 overs. England, especially a hot-headed Stuart Broad, grew increasingly frustrated on a day where the home side's lofty fielding standards slipped before Swann finally broke through late on.
The day, though, belonged to one man's single-minded determination yet it could all have ended first ball for Zulqarnain. He will have become an immediate fan of the UDRS when he avoided becoming the first Pakistan batsman to bag a king pair after being given out lbw to Swann. Five hours later he lofted Swann to deep mid-off, 12 short of the hundred he deserved, but having lifted the spirits of a nation.
His resolute defence certainly got under the skin of Broad who was convinced he had Zulqarnain caught behind but there wasn't enough evidence to overturn the on-field not-out decision. At the end of the over Broad then hurled the ball back at Zulqarnain, which led to the umpires having a word to Andrew Strauss about his fast bowler.
It was another day where Broad will have gained the interest of the match referee having failed to turn around during an appeal in the morning session when he thought Azhar Ali had edged to the keeper. However, on this occasion the review wasn't called and it proved the correct decision as Azhar had missed the ball by miles and Broad was left a little embarrassed.
Amir was another obstacle for England, showing up his top-order colleagues with a sturdy defence. He was given three lives, first when Broad compounded his problems with a wild throw when Amir had 1 and would have been well short, then Paul Collingwood - who earlier dropped Imran Frahat - couldn't gather a gentle chance at slip off Swann and Alastair Cook missed an opportunity at silly point off Collingwood.
Broad eventually extracted Amir with the second new ball when he edged to first slip, but there was no shifting Zulqarnain as he slowly started to come out of his shell. He took the attack to Swann - at one point backing well outside leg - and reached fifty from 150 balls which was celebrated with gusto. He got under the skin of England's bowlers with his mannerisms at the crease, and the fact the hosts became riled is the biggest compliment they could have paid Zulqarnain.
Ajmal, though, was the one provided the innings impetus as he gave as he good as he got, pulling Broad and Steven Finn through the leg side and showing a straight bat to Swann. However, in the over after he greeted his fifty with a roar to the dressing room he edged Swann low to slip after the offspinner had switch to round the wicket.
It was a tough day for England's attack and Swann was far and away the pick having barely played a part - except at second slip - until today. He struck in his first over and claimed three more in his first spell which, at one stage, included 67 consecutive dot balls as he bowled 17 maidens in a 24-over unchanged stint until being given a break shortly before tea.
Swann was introduced towards the end of the opening hour, after the quicks failed to break through, and began with a magical ball to remove Farhat as his third delivery dipped in towards leg stump then gripped and turned past a lunging batsman to take the top of off stump. A year ago Swann produced a pearler on this ground to remove Ricky Ponting, but this delivery has every right to be the finest of his career.
Swann, though, was just getting started. He then produced a Ponting-like ball to remove Azhar as the right hander was suckered into driving against the spin and was bowled through the gate. There was almost a third for Swann straight away when Umar Akmal showed his complete lack of understanding of Test cricket by charging his first delivery, another one which spun through the gate, but Matt Prior couldn't make a tough take.
It was with some irony, then, that Akmal's innings was ended in the most defensive fashion as he padded up to a straight ball from Swann. He tried to save himself with a review, but the ball was clipping the bails. Another beautiful piece of bowling from Swann did for Umar Amin and the end looked close. In fact, the match was just getting interesting.

Zardari Shoecide Attack

BIRMINGHAM, England — A protestor threw a shoe at President Zardari in protest at his decision to visit UK despite PM
Cameron’s insulting comments and the floods crisis in Pakistan. More information to follow on this, including video.
Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari was to attend a rally here Saturday as protesters demonstrated against his presence in Britain during the flooding disaster back home.
Zardari was due to speak at a political event in Birmingham, central England, for Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) members and leading figures in the Pakistani community in Britain.
Hundreds of demonstrators from various standpoints gathered outside the International Convention Centre venue in Britain’s second city, chanting and waving placards.
It comes the day after Zardari held talks with British Prime Minister David Cameron, when the pair agreed to step up their anti-terror cooperation following Cameron’s controversial claims about Pakistani attitudes towards terrorism.
With the flooding disaster affecting up to 15 million people in Pakistan, Zardari has come under fire from some quarters in Pakistan and Britain for continuing with his trip to Europe during the crisis.
Some demonstrators held up shoes to pictures of Zardari, while others held placards reading “1000s dying, president is holidaying”, “Thousands killed, millions homeless, what president is laughing for?” and “Are the Zardaris enjoying England while Pakistan drowns?”.

Mohammed Khalil, a local official from the Tehreek-e-Insaf party headed by former Pakistan cricket captain Imran Khan, was among those protesting against Zardari.
“His own people are dying for food, there’s calamity there,” he told.
“He should be there organising for his own people. Instead he’s here with so many people. The government is paying all the expense for that. That money should be spent on the people of Pakistan, not on himself.”Taji Mustafa, from the Hizb-ut-Tahrir organisation, said Pakistanis were outraged.
“There is no self-respecting leader in the world who in this time of dire national crisis, while people are drowning, he is drowning in enjoyment, he is drowning having lavish dinners in the company of his die-hard supporters,” he said.
Wajid Ali Burkey, a PPP business forums coordinator in Britain, defended Zardari as he went into the event. “In the last 70 years we have not had such a disaster. But I don’t think the president being there or not being there would have made any difference,” he said. The demonstrators “have a right of opinion to believe he should not have come, but I personally believe it is very important.”
The PPP is co-chaired by Zardari and his son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
A PPP spokesman had said Bhutto Zardari would attend the Birmingham event and might speak at it but the 21-year-old on Saturday denied the rally was meant to launch his political career as he opened a donation point at the Pakistani High Commission in London.
The Oxford University history graduate vehemently defended his father’s visit to Europe. “He’s doing the best he can and what he thinks is best to help the people of Pakistan” he said.

Anil Kapoor won’t charge fee for acting in the remake of a Marathi film produced by Salman Khan’s Being Human Foundation

Anil Kapoor will work for free in Mahesh Manjrekar’s Hindi remake of Mee Shivajiraje Bhosle Boltoy (MSBB), produced bySalman Khan’s Being Human Foundation.
ays a source, “Anil and Mahesh met at Khan’s house a few days ago to finalise the details. An announcement will be made shortly, Anil is expected to play the role Sachin Khedekar played in the original.”
Manjrekar prefers to be guarded. He says, “We are in talks with stars but at this stage, I do not want to name anyone. There is many a slip between the cup and the lip. Once everything is on paper, we will make a formal announcement.”
Mee Shivajiraje…, which released in April 2009, was penned by Manjrekar who played the title role. Themovie is about an ordinary middle-class Maharashtrian (played by Khedekar) who finds nothing going right for him.
Enter Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who transforms his life and tells him to take responsibility for what he does.
The film is akin to Lage Raho Munnabhai, which had Mahatma Gandhi guiding Munnabhai. Like Munnabhai, who alone could see the Father of the Nation, in MSBB, only the simple Maharashtrian guy can see the Chhatrapati.
Apart from MSBB, Manjrekar’s other Marathi film Shikshanacha Aaicha Gho (SAG), which takes on the educational system, is also being produced under the Being Human banner.
Adds Manjrekar, “I will be remaking both films. SAG will go on the floors first.”
Salman Khan and Kangna Ranaut are slated to feature in the SAG remake and Sallu will play dad to two kids.
Buzz is that the proceeds of the movies will entirely go towards the Being Human Foundation charities.
Anil Kapoor remained unavailable for comment.

Atif Aslam, “Music Reality Shows are Scripted”

Atif Aslam came to Dhaka on 30th July to perform at a concert and on his 4th visit to Bangladesh, Atif in an interview with the local newspaper of Dhaka shared his love for the ‘City of Mosques’, Dhaka, his views on the music reality shows and responded to the criticism he gets.
On Asking about the city and how well the audience here at Dhaka receives him, he said,
“The people here are very nice to me. They seem to have something to say me all the time which is either related to me or my music.”
He also added that Dhaka is one of his favorite cities. He said,
“To be very honest with you, Dhaka is one of my favorite cities. The city is amazing and it relaxes me to a great extent. Apart from the horrible traffic jams of Dhaka, the city is great to explore for the enthusiastic. The women in saree look awesome here. They look gorgeous, gracious and lovely.”
On asking about his take on music reality shows, Atif Aslam said that music reality shows are not reality shows, and rather they can be called as scripted shows. He said,
“I’m sorry to say, they are not reality shows, and rather they can be called as scripted shows. I took part in one of one such show as a guest judge where I was asked by the director of that particular show to hug someone, whom I did not want to hug. He went on to ask me to praise someone whom I did not want to praise. So I can’t cheat my fans by participating on such shows which are not real. Moreover I consider myself too small to judge someone. But on a lighter note, I would like to go on reality shows to meet the celebrities who can have the time to criticize me on a fine day!”
He also responded to the recent criticism he got from the singing diva of bollywood Sunidhi Chouhan, who said that Atif Aslam can’t sing. Atif commented,
“I’m glad that a senior singer like Sunidhi Chouhan had said something about me. Frankly speaking, I do not care what they have to say about me. I just focus on my work and concentrate solely on my music.”

Lara: I’m sure good roles will of course come

In last year and a half, there has been a flurry of films starring Lara Dutta with BILLU, DO KNOT DISTURB, BLUE and HOUSEFULL coming one after another. However, as things stand today, it won’t be a year before one would see Lara Dutta on the big screen again. For someone who has impressed every time when given an opportunity, whether it is PARTNER, JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM, NO ENTRY, MASTI or ANDAAZ, she definitely deserves a lot-lot more. Doesn’t she also feel that she should be getting a lot more visibility in the world of movies?
“Well, all I can say is that you make the best of the choices that come your way,” says Lara after a pause, “When I look back, it has been a good innings so far. Whether it is the films that you mention or even BILLU which came last year, they all have been very special to me in my career. Perhaps a few films may not have done well but as an actor they took me forward. These films gave me a chance to be seen in performance oriented roles.”
